Opera for iPhone hits a million downloads on first day

Opera for iPhone hits a million downloads on first day

Wednesday, 21 April 2010

Opera's popular mobile web browser, Opera Mini has been approved for the iPhone and iPod Touch by Apple and is now available on the App Store. On its first day of release Opera Mini topped the iTunes App download charts and was downloaded over 1 million times.

Opera Mini for the iPhone and iPod Touch is said to increase page load speed, and users on slower networks such as 2G Edge are said to notice this uptake in speed. This increase in speed is achieved by compressing the website data up to 90% before sending it to the device.

Users of Opera Mini for the iPhone and iPod Touch are already commenting on the increased speed of the browser, with some surprised that Apple approved it due to their strict rules, however there have been some alternative browsers on the App Store for quite a while.

We have used the browser and are also impressed with the speed, however when the page is fully zoomed out, page text is unreadable, having to zoom right in to read. We think that it does not have the ease of use that Safari does, but as we have said the speed of Opera is its best feature.

Opera Mini for the iPhone and iPod Touch is available for free from the App Store.
