Microsoft conference lifts lid on Windows Phone 7 Series

Tuesday, 16 March 2010

More Windows Phone 7 Series details have emerged from Microsoft's MIX developer conference in Las Vegas.

As the conference is aimed at developers it focuses more on how developers can build applications for Windows Phone 7 Series. This has uncovered some features and given an idea of what could be expected from devices running the mobile operating system.

Microsoft has strict specification requirements for all Windows Phone 7 Series phones. From this we have seen that all devices will have multi-touch capability. This already sounds very iPhone-esq but the similarities don't end there. Just like the iPhone has a 'push' notification service, Microsoft has incorporated a similar service into the operating system. Hinting that there will be no true multi-tasking on the handsets.

Continuing with the minimum specifications the display must be a capacitive touch screen with four or more contact points. There will be a minimum of 256MB of RAM and 8GB internal storage. The camera will be at least 5 megapixels and will have a flash and hardware shutter button. And the devices will also have GPS, compass, a light sensor, accelerometer and proximity sensor. Three hardware buttons, back, start and search will also have to be present on the front of the phone.

These handsets will offer strong multimedia features and look set to be high class smartphones if the minimum specifications are anything to go by. Hopefully the hardware won't be let down by the software but we will have to wait till much later in the year to find out.
