Apple responds to iPhone 4 signal problems
Apple responds to iPhone 4 signal problems
Friday, 25 June 2010Many owners of Apple's new iPhone 4 have been reporting signal issues when holding the phone.
When the phone was being held covering the left side and bottom the signal would drop and sometimes disappear. Users have reported that the signal bars would slowly go from five to zero when holding the phone in that place. Videos have also been posted online showing the problem.
Users have been emailing Apple asking about the problem, and Apple has responded with the following:
Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.
This response has also caused some frustration with users of the new device, however other users have reported that other handsets such as the iPhone 3G, Nexus One and HTC HD 2 have a similar issue when holding in certain places.
We tried to see if we could recreate the problem in an O2 store, but we didn't succeed. Other users have been reporting that their iPhone 4 doesn't have the problem. When we get our iPhone 4 we will let you know what we find.
