The Motorola Milestone is an Android phone with slide out keyboard and full touch screen. The phone has a quality feel and looks well built and durable. Even the slide out keyboard feels well constructed and doesn't feel like its going to break each time it is opened. Its good looks include little hints of style with bronze on the back, keyboard and camera button.

The touchscreen covers most of the front of the phone, and is vibrant and responsive. Its great for viewing pictures and videos and is easy to use.

The Milestone has as a 5 megapixel auto focus camera with LED flash but in our view the quality of the pictures is only average. It can connect to WiFi networks and has GPS with preloaded navigation software. There is no FM radio but it plays music and video. The phone runs on the latest Android version 2 software so all Google applications are present such as Maps and Gmail. This new version of Android adds word suggestions when you type but unfortunately no auto correction, which would be useful. The on screen keyboard and real slide out Qwerty keyboard are both equally usable but still have their difficulties with either hitting the wrong letter or hitting more than one.

One of the benefits (though social networkers wouldn't agree) of this device is that it is not heavily focused on social networking like so many handsets are at the moment. It is fresh to use a handset that doesn't require signing up to social networking tools. Fear not though, if you want your favourite social networking tools, most can be downloaded from the Android marketplace.

Overall this is a good quality phone from Motorola and will appeal to first time smartphone users and to those who prefer a real keyboard. It also has a sense of professionalism and would appeal to business people.

Summary:

  • Good Points: well built, good responsive touchscreen
  • Bad Points: Average quality photos
  • Others to Consider: Apple iPhone, HTC Hero
  • Free on contract with: T-Mobile,Vodafone, Orange
