This is Motorola’s phone for girls; at least that is their immediate target audience. I must admit that this phone is quite a novelty on first appearance, shaped as it is like a very large jewel (hence the name), with its bevelled edges. It certainly looks the part, and Motorola have stuck with their favoured clamshell design for this phone.

However, this phone doesn’t offer a lot to the modern phone market apart from its striking appearance. It has a mirrored effect external display, with the screensavers appearing to ghost across the surface of the phone. It’s quite cool but it is merely superficial. It features a 2 megapixel camera, which is very poor by modern standards, and will not be selling itself as a camera phone, with other companies making phones that have at least 3.2 megapixel cameras.

This phone does, however, have a pretty decent mp3 player, and the phone has room for up to 4gb of memory, with a memory card, which is fairly decent. It doesn’t have too many other features other than Bluetooth and quadband, which does mean it can be used anywhere in the World.

It has pretty good battery life, although it has been known to freeze, so it does have some notable problems.

It’s not a phone that will set the World on fire, but then Motorola have been struggling to compete in any major sense for years now, and for this to be one of their best models really says it all; having said that, it is quite a nifty phone to look at, and I’m sure the girls will love it for its novelty, but unfortunately it is just that to be honest, a novelty.

Summary:

  • Good Points: Good mp3 player, and a good battery life, unique appearance as well.
  • Bad Points: The 2 megapixel camera with no flash is just poor by modern standards.
  • Others to Consider: Sony Ericsson W980i.
  • Free on Contract with: O2 & T-Mobile.
