The Snap is a phone that HTC is hoping will be a serious contender to BlackBerry and their business phones. This phone is certainly, in appearance, a contender, as it looks as if it has come straight out of the BlackBerry factory.

It doesn’t aim to be too flashy either, it is simple, solid and reliable; it is a fairly comfortable phone to hold too, if not a little chunky at 120g. It has a decent enough 2.4 inch screen, but has a slightly disappointing 320x240 QVGA resolution; however, it is pretty bright, and makes it easier to read, even in sunlight. The QWERTY keyboard is pretty sizeable, and is simple to use too.

It has 192mb of in-built memory, as well as the expected microSD card slot, so memory shouldn’t be too much hassle. This phone makes use of Windows Mobile 6.1, which has been known to be awkward to use and somewhat frustrating at times.

The camera is pretty poor, just 2.0 megapixels, with no flash or autofocus, which is very disappointing, and it has a pretty poor battery life, which is a letdown when compared to BlackBerrys, which are renowned to have fairly decent battery lives. Despite this, it does have good Wi-Fi and HSDPA features, which is welcome.

The Snap isn’t a bad phone, but when compared to its obvious competitors from BlackBerry, it falls short, thanks, in main, to the use of Windows Mobile 6.1 software and the poor battery life.

Summary:

  • Good Points: The well sized QWERTY keypad and decent internet access.
  • Bad Points: The poor battery life and the awkward Windows Mobile 6.1 software.
  • Others to Consider: BlackBerry Bold, Apple iPhone.
  • Free on Contract with: Orange, O2 & Vodafone.
