Acer may be a name you associate more readily with PCs and laptops, but with the Tempo F900, Acer have released their first unique, in-house produced smartphone; and it certainly looks the part.

The Tempo F900 features a very good, ample 3.8 inch, high resolution screen (800x480 pixels), which makes viewing web-pages, videos and photos a real joy. However, the touchscreen interface is perhaps not as accurate as some of its main competitors, but not by a major amount.

This phone comes with 256mb of internal memory, which is easily expandable with the readily accessible microSD card, as with nearly every phone available these days. The phone isn’t the quickest phone available either, but it isn’t slow by any means, just in comparison to some of its competitors.

The available internet browser is pretty poor, so you’ll probably want to download the Opera web browser to improve the web browsing experience; with the available Wi-Fi and HSDPA, surfing is both quick and easy. Other features are the obligatory GPS as well as a decent FM tuner.

The camera is 3.2 megapixels with a decent LED flash and autofocus, so the camera is good enough for most peoples needs.

It uses Windows Mobile 6.1, but with Acer’s own Shell software working alongside it to make navigation that bit easier, and offers a novel and dynamic desktop layout home-page, which is fun to use.

Acer’s first major phone is fairly good across the board in all honesty and is good fun to use, there are quite a few similar phones available, but this shouldn’t be overlooked.

Summary:

  • Good Points: A nice, large, high resolution screen.
  • Bad Points: At times is a bit slow and unresponsive.
  • Others to Consider: HTC Touch HD, Samsung Omnia i900.
